Having lived in the area for over 40 years I have seen a few changes in the restaurant business. I don’t think there has ever been as many changes as there has been in the Gulf Gate area. This unique par- cel of businesses has included a collection of shops, bars, nightclubs, strip clubs (why do I remember Black Friar’s!!!), late nite bottle clubs, Christian Science reading rooms, Scandinavian Gift Shop, an aquarium store and so much more! Eclectic? YES! Once you arrive in the Gulf Gate area, park and stroll the few blocks and get a feel.

There are now 48 restaurants in the Gulf Gate and South Sarasota area that present a plethora of global food choices. Ever changing we will present some of those to you in this article. As quaint as it has been over the years, the Gulf Gate area is in need of a rejuvena- tion and that is coming with new paved roads, parking areas, lighting and landscaping very, very soon. To help with parking both Superior and Gateway Avenues will be one way and have angled parking. This will be welcome news to those that have a business there and for the public who might have been reluctant to visit. In the meantime we hope you enjoy the article and do pay a visit soon.
Directions: Take Rt 41 (Tamiami Trail) to Gulf Gate Drive (just south of the Stickney Point and Rt 41 intersection) and turn east into the Gulf Gate area which consists of the several square block area of Gateway Avenue, Superior Avenue, Mall Drive, Gulf Gate Drive.
